Linux and quotas

I spent the last thirty minutes troubleshooting why my quotas weren't working. I had the filesystem mounted with quotas, I re-ran quotacheck, everything looked 100%. Everytime I would create a new file the quota wouldn't be updated to reflect the change. I was pulling my hair out until:

quotaon /filesystem

Apparently everything can look 100% OK, but quotas aren't in effect until you turn them on!
